Aegiq Deploys UK's First On-Premises Quantum Computer

Aegiq has made history by deploying the first company-owned, on-premises quantum computer in a national park. The system, a photonic quantum processing unit (QPU), has been installed at the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) in Oxfordshire. This marks a significant milestone in the UK's Quantum Missions Pilot Programme.

The QPU, commissioned in September 2023, is a hybrid system that combines compound-semiconductor single-photon emitters with silicon-photonic waveguides. This innovative architecture eliminates the need for cryogenic cooling, reducing the system's footprint significantly. The modular design allows for easy upgrades or replacements of components without re-engineering the entire system.

Currently, the system is undergoing testing with real-world workloads from various industries, including energy and defence. This process aims to validate the platform and identify potential bottlenecks. Notably, the system uses light-based processors that can be integrated into existing research infrastructure, enabling complex algorithms to run without specialized, remote access. Aegiq's Lightworks software development kit facilitates this process by allowing developers to upload quantum circuits and schedule runs remotely.

The successful commissioning of this photonic QPU is a testament to the collaboration between the UK's quantum supply chain, including QuiX Quantum, LioniX International, Razor, and Fraunhofer CAP. This achievement brings the UK closer to harnessing the power of quantum computing for practical, near-term solutions to industry challenges.
