AI-Powered Motion Estimation enhances accurate 3D Tracking within Boris FX SynthEyes

SynthEyes 2025.5, the latest release from Boris FX, is making waves in the VFX industry with its innovative AI-driven features designed to streamline and enhance 3D match-moving workflows.

One of the standout additions is the ML Motion Estimation, an AI-powered motion tracking mode that leverages deep learning models to calculate optical flow between frames. This alternative to traditional tracking methods shines particularly on low-texture surfaces and in scenarios involving fast motion or heavy camera movement, significantly improving tracking accuracy where conventional methods struggle.

Another significant improvement is the Lens Workflow Export feature. This streamlined process produces consistent lens data ready for any post-production pipeline, ensuring the lens parameters are maintained accurately for downstream VFX work.

The Parent Mesh to Tracker feature allows users to parent geometry meshes directly to solved 3D tracker points, automating the process of attaching 3D assets to motion data. This time-saving feature supports pivot adjustments, scene scaling, and iterative solving, reacting intelligently to changes such as focal length adjustments or distortion parameters.

In addition, the new mask dilation setting in Mask ML's instant AI mask creation offers artists finer control over mask behavior. This allows them to expand or contract the edges of AI-generated masks to achieve cleaner, more precise mattes for compositing and tracking purposes.

SynthEyes 2025.5 is available as a low-cost standalone application. It is also available with subscription, perpetual, and upgrade & support renewal options. Prices start at $325/year or $62/month.

The new release focuses on strengthening tracking complex shots, quicker scene setup, and reliable exports. It now supports Blackmagic URSA Cine 17K 65 and offers advanced controls for margin, resolution, and rounding adjustments in Lens Workflow exports.

Moreover, SynthEyes 2025.5 introduces automatic orientation handling on video files with rotation metadata (TIFF, PNG, JPEG, ProRes). ML Motion Estimation uses machine-learned patterns for per-pixel motion vectors, improving tracker prediction, reducing cleanups, and lowering solve errors on difficult footage.
