AI-Powered University Publication Debuts among Students in Kazakhstan
Unleashing AI-Powered Innovation: Kazakhstan's First AI Newspaper
Step into the future with Astana, as Master's students from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University shake up the journalism world with AI-Tamyz - the very first AI-driven, multimedia, inclusive, and thought-provoking newspaper in the Kazakh language.
Check out the stunning images from KazNU below.
The brainchild of students at the Faculty of Journalism, AI-Tamyz doesn't disappoint - offering not just a printed edition, but digital, audio-text, and video content as well! Models like ChatGPT, GEMINI, WhisperAI, MicMonster, Text-to-Speech, CanvaAI, DALL-E, Midjourney, SunoAI, and more were employed to generate articles, images, videos, and audio content.
Accessibility for visually impaired readers is ensured through QR codes containing audio versions of articles, conveniently placed in the bottom right corner of each page.
The name AI-Tamyz embodies a powerful message. A combination of Ai and Tamyz reads like Aitamyz, which means "We speak" in Kazakh, symbolizing their commitment to voice vital scientific, educational, and social issues. Tamyz also means August in Kazakh, underscoring the hope that the publication will reap abundant benefits for its readers.
The idea for AI-Tamyz was born during a Data Journalism seminar session, inspired by the news of Italy's AI-generated newspaper. Lecturer Kanat Auesbaiuly fueled the students’ creativity with his challenge to create a similar project in the Kazakh language, despite limited Kazakh language support in AI tools.
"Producing the newspaper with AI was no walk in the park. However, we persevered. It took testing numerous AI programs, issuing hundreds of prompts, and tons of hard work to achieve our goal," shared Nur-Altay Umirzak, the editor-in-chief of AI-Tamyz.
Looking ahead, AI-Tamyz plans to forge a tight alliance with students from the university's IT Faculty, focusing on programming to create integrated software for Kazakh text, audio, and video content.
With ambitious plans to delve deeper into automation and inclusivity, AI-Tamyz may well morph into a crucial component of Kazakhstan's digitalization efforts, aiding in projects like smart tourism frameworks and subsoil management systems.
As AI makes its way into journalism, striking a balance between innovation and cultural authenticity will be paramount, leveraging the unique blend of human oversight and AI-driven efficiency as seen in Italy's Foglio AI.
Excited for more updates? Keep your eyes peeled for the monthly or weekly publications of AI-Tamyz - designed with you, the student, faculty member, or researcher, in mind. Welcome to a new era in Kazakh journalism!
