AI users should exercise caution, advised V-C to researchers
The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) recently hosted a significant conference, organized by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) led by Prof. Okechukwu Nwaubani. The event, themed "Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Transformative Social Security in 21st Century," was attended by scholars and educators from various institutions.
Prof. Simon Ortuanya, the Vice-Chancellor of UNN, delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of AI in reshaping sectors such as medicine, manufacturing, finance, agriculture, and education. However, he also advised scholars to exercise caution in their application of AI, acknowledging its potential negative effects.
Prof. Ortuanya was represented by Prof. Romanus Ezeokonkwo, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, while Prof. Christian Ezeibe, the Dean of the Department of Students Affairs at UNN, emphasized AI's potential to transform teaching, learning, and various aspects of life.
The vision of the Society of Social Security Associations of Nigeria (SOSAN) is to build and sustain a strong and stable Nigeria through social security education. SOSAN, led by Prof. Abdulraheem Yusuf as the National President, believes that AI has permeated every facet of the economy, especially in education. They are committed to promoting the visibility and relevance of social security education in Nigeria.
According to Prof. Ezeibe, AI is not meant to replace humans but to amplify their potential with proper preparation. He stated that AI makes social security teaching more engaging and transformative, shaping students to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, and responsible citizens in the digital world.
The social security educationists association is contributing significantly to the country's economy, particularly in education development. The conference topic is considered relevant to the promotion of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching social security.
The outcome of the conference is expected to empower educators and prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century. SOSAN, through this conference, aims to revolutionize all sectors of life, including education, with AI. The ideals of SOSAN resonate with the conference theme, which focuses on leveraging AI for transformative social security education in Nigeria.
