AIDA Cruises Secures Victory in Two Categories at the ESG Shipping Awards 2025

On May 23, 2025, AIDA Cruises, a prominent player in the German cruise industry, was honored with two prestigious accolades at the ESG Shipping Awards held in Athens, Greece. These awards, annually bestowed to recognize marine businesses for their commitments to sustainability and responsible conduct, placed AIDA Cruises in the spotlight as a leader in both technological innovation and community service.

AIDA cruises took home the Silver award in the "Technology Leader" category for its cutting-edge initiative utilizing biofuels. The company's pioneering move to power one of its ships, AIDAprima, using this eco-friendly blend made it the first large-scale cruise vessel to do so. This move is indicative of AIDA's long-term strategy to develop low-emission propulsion technologies and aims to achieve net-zero emissions in ship operations by 2050. The chosen biofuels are capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 85 percent, further showcasing the company's dedication to environmental sustainability[1][5].

In addition, AIDA received another Silver award in the "Community Leader" category for its philanthropic program, AIDA Cruise & Help. Established in 2019, this initiative focuses on increasing educational opportunities for children and young people in developing and emerging countries, particularly in those linked to AIDA's ports and the home countries of its crew members. The scheme has so far funded the construction of 80 schools, providing education for approximately 12,000 children across the globe[1][3].

These awards serve as testament to AIDA Cruises' dual focus on advancing sustainable marine technology and fostering social good in the communities it serves. AIDA Cruises' strides in biofuel innovation and continued philanthropy position it as a forerunner in sustainable cruising and corporate social responsibility within the maritime industry[1].

In 2024, AIDA was also acknowledged with a Gold Award for equipping AIDAprima with the largest battery storage system in passenger shipping, underlining its role in accelerating environmental progress[1]. AIDA Cruises, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc, employs 18,000 people from 60 countries, making it the largest private employer in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.

AIDA Cruises, through its use of biofuels, has been recognized as a leader in technology, earning a Silver award for being the first large-scale cruise vessel to power a ship using eco-friendly biofuels. Additionally, the company's philanthropic program, AIDA Cruise & Help, has received a Silver award in the Community Leader category for providing educational opportunities to children in developing and emerging countries. These awards underscore AIDA's commitment to both technological innovation and community service in the sports and maritime industry.
