Increased the Wi-Fi 7 network coverage in my backyard by incorporating a TP-Link Deco BE25-Outdoor satellite, thereby enhancing long-distance connection performance by fourfold.

In a bid to improve wireless coverage and speed in their outdoor spaces, a user has made several upgrades to their home network. The latest addition to their setup is the TP-Link Deco BE25-Outdoor mesh satellite, purchased from Amazon for less than $150 after rewards.

The user initially faced wireless coverage issues in their backyard, especially at the fire pit, which is about 30 feet from the back porch. To address this, they upgraded their home network from a Netgear Orbi RBK50 Wi-Fi 5 mesh system to the TP-Link Deco BE63, a high-performance tri-band Wi-Fi 7 system.

However, it was the addition of the Deco BE25-Outdoor that made a significant difference. Benchmark tests using iPerf3 revealed that the BE25-Outdoor significantly improves outdoor Wi-Fi performance in a backyard setting compared to the Deco BE63 alone. On the 5 GHz band at the fire pit, the BE25-Outdoor more than doubled throughput from 115 Mbps to 270 Mbps compared to using only Deco BE63 units. On the 2.4 GHz band, the BE25-Outdoor quadrupled performance at the fire pit and tripled throughput on the porch itself.

This indicates that the BE25-Outdoor excels at extending the mesh coverage and boosting performance at greater outdoor distances, likely due to its outdoor-optimized design and potentially better antenna placement. Meanwhile, the BE63 base mesh system delivers strong speeds indoors and on the porch but experiences a sharper drop off further away that the BE25 helps mitigate.

The user installed the Deco BE25-Outdoor on their screened-in back porch using a wall mount and connected it to the main Deco BE65 router using a 2.4 GHz + 5 GHz MLO link. They also performed a firmware update to ensure the BE25-Outdoor is up-to-date with the rest of their mesh network.

With the Deco BE25-Outdoor in place, all the user's supported devices now connect to a dedicated 6 GHz band on the Deco BE63, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity. The user expects to have wireless coverage good enough for streaming Plex or Sling TV in their future workshop due to the broader range afforded by the Deco BE25-Outdoor.

The user's experience with the Deco BE25-Outdoor has been positive, finding the physical install process and software setup to be easy. They plan to purchase another BE25-Outdoor satellite to extend wireless coverage in their backyard further.
