Anglo American commits equity for Horizon's new hydrogen electrolyser venture debut
In a significant move towards green hydrogen production, Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies has established a new subsidiary, HET Hydrogen Pte Ltd. This venture has received financial and technical backing from Anglo American, a leading global producer of electrolysis-enabling platinum group metals (PGMs).
HET Hydrogen Pte Ltd aims to commercialise megawatt (MW) scale electrolyser modules immediately, with the first commercial deployment of its 1MW electrolyser expected in the coming weeks. The 1MW units will form the modular building block for 5MW systems, which are expected to be deployed from 2024.
Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies brings a strong market position to the table, having transformed itself into a global leader in high-powered fuel cells for demanding applications such as commercial vehicles. The company has a proven track record in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) technology, an essential component in hydrogen electrolysers.
HET Hydrogen Pte Ltd has been established with a mandate to follow a similar strategy as Horizon, leveraging Horizon's experience in PEM materials and components, and the sale of thousands of small-scale electrolysers since 2008. The company is currently securing ISO-22734 certification and CE certification for its core 1MW electrolyser module, covering PED, MD, EMC, and ATEX.
Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies leads the market in fuel cell power density characteristics, with single stacks able to generate more than 250kW continuously. This industry-leading performance, combined with competitive cost structures, ensures the lowest possible cost of green hydrogen.
The partnership between HET Hydrogen Pte Ltd and Anglo American will focus on optimising the use of PGMs to facilitate the further growth of PEM electrolyser technologies. PGMs are critical in bringing PEM electrolysers to market at scale.
As the hydrogen electrolyser market grows rapidly, new players like HET Hydrogen Pte Ltd are contributing to green hydrogen production infrastructure. However, the sector faces challenges such as high capital costs and reliance on renewable electricity supply consistency. Industry participants are moving towards commercial scale production with plans frequently targeting full operational deployment by late 2025 or beyond.
For the most current and specific updates on HET Hydrogen Pte Ltd's operational projects or future plans, it may be necessary to check direct company releases or industry news beyond July 2025. HET Hydrogen Pte Ltd's goal is to help decarbonise industries such as transport, steel manufacturing, and fertiliser production.
