Apple broadens self-service repair options for Mac laptops

In a move to empower customers and independent repair providers, Apple has expanded its Self-Service Repair program to Mac notebooks with M1 chips, starting August 23. This initiative, which was first introduced for iPhone models earlier this year, aims to provide users with the tools and resources to repair their devices safely and reliably.

With more than 3,500 Independent Repair Providers and a global network of over 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers, customers now have access to a wide array of service resources. These providers are equipped with Apple tools, engineered to withstand the rigors of high-volume, professional repair operations, ensuring the best possible repairs for Apple products.

For those without experience in repairing electronic devices, visiting a professional repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair. Every genuine Apple part is designed and engineered for each product and undergoes extensive testing to ensure safety and reliability.

Apple understands the importance of convenience and has made it easier for customers to access the necessary parts and tools. The Apple Self Service Repair Store allows customers to order these items directly, and for those who prefer not to purchase tools for a single repair, Apple offers rental tools for $49. The tool rental kit will be shipped free of charge and customers will have access to it for one week.

In many cases, customers can receive credit for their purchase by sending replaced parts back to Apple for refurbishment and recycling. This not only helps in reducing electronic waste but also provides an opportunity for customers to offset the cost of repairs.

The Self Service Repair program for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro notebooks with M1 processors is currently available in eight European countries since December 2022, with plans to expand genuine part distribution for independent shops across Europe later in 2025. Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and training over the past three years, making it easier than ever for customers to find a reputable repair provider.

The program offers more than a dozen different repair types for each model, providing extensive coverage for common issues. Whether it's a battery replacement, display repair, or logic board fix, customers can now handle these repairs themselves with the right resources and tools.

By expanding the Self-Service Repair program, Apple is not only empowering customers but also fostering a more sustainable and efficient repair ecosystem. With more people able to repair their devices independently, there's less reliance on single-use components and less waste generated from device repairs.

In the US, eight out of 10 Apple customers are located within 20 minutes of an authorized service provider, making it easier than ever for customers to access professional repair services when needed. Whether you choose to repair your device yourself or visit a professional, Apple is committed to providing the resources and tools for safe, reliable, and efficient repairs.
