Apple Deploys iPadOS 18 Release Following Tablet Malfunctions Incident
Upgrading to the highly anticipated iPadOS 18 didn't go as smoothly as expected for some M4 iPad Pro owners. These lucky (or unlucky, depending on your perspective) individuals encountered an undefined snag that left their prized tablets unconscious and forced them to embark on an unwanted journey to the Apple Store for a fix. Now, the iPadOS 18 patch is back on the menu, so Pro owners can give it another go, though they're advised to proceed with caution.
Apple swiftly put a pause on the iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pros shortly after its Sept. 17 launch, following user complaints of tablets halting mid-update, crashing, and then refusing to reboot. MacRumors had the scoop, as a few fortunate users reported seamless upgrades, while the unlucky lot encountered the aforementioned troubles. Apple Store personnel suggested send-aways, with replacement iPads priced at a grand $1,000.
Redditors were first to spill the beans on the patch's return, more than two weeks after its initial disappearance on Sept. 17. The 18.0.1 update doesn't mention the bricking incident at all, instead reusing the identical language from the initial 18.0 launch.
Here at Gizmodo, our M4 iPad Pro updated hassle-free to iPadOS 18, directly from the 18 beta. Some Users speculated that the original issue could be linked to the jump from iPadOS 17.7 to the latest version. Regrettably, Apple has yet to publicly acknowledge or comment on these problems. Delightful tidbits about iPadOS 18 have emerged, however, like Math Notes for handwritten equations and enhancements to Safari, allowing you to rid those pesky ads.
Apple's other devices seem to be holding up fairly well, sans some hiccups. Apple Watch users bumping into the watchOS 11.1 beta 3 stumbled upon a freeze following a restart. MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris broke the news on Twitter, with Apple pulling the 11.1 beta 3 that same week. Meanwhile, HomePod Minis have grappled with their very own beta patch problem, according to Perris and MacRumors reports. HomePod users reported their devices shutting down following the 18.1 beta 2 install, refusing to restart even after trouncing out the update.
