Apple Could Potentially Use 3D Printing for Select Models of the Upcoming Watch Series 9

Rumors have been circulating about Apple's possible incorporation of 3D printing in its product design and manufacturing process. A new report by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg suggests a strategic shift in this regard.

According to the report, Apple is contemplating 3D printing certain models of the forthcoming Apple Watch Series 9 as a preliminary test before integrating the technology into other product lines. The sources for this information are "people familiar with the matter," as Gurman stated, adding a note of caution since the news has not been formally confirmed by Apple.

The application of 3D printing technology would primarily focus on manufacturing the chassis for the non-Ultra Apple Watch models. This could save Apple valuable time and resources as the process eliminates the need for cutting large metal slabs to create individual watch parts. Furthermore, it could result in fewer environmental impacts as less overall material would be required to build the watches.

Gurman revealed that the process Apple plans to use is called binder jetting, which involves creating prints using a powdered substance that undergoes subsequent sintering for hardening. The process ultimately results in a material similar to traditional steel.

The anticipated Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 are set to be announced on September 12, shedding light on whether the speculation regarding 3D printing holds any merit.

During Apple's September 'Wanderlust' event, the company is expected to unveil the new iPhone 15 series and the Apple Watch Series 9 lineup. The 3D printing process has reportedly been in development for at least three years, and Apple will trial it on select models of the upcoming watches. However, the widespread adoption of this new manufacturing technique will only occur once its success has been confirmed with the upcoming Watch 9 Series.

Disregarding any unrelated background or personal information, the current information available does not definitively verify Apple's 3D printing use for Apple Watch Series 9 chassis nor specify the exact 3D printing techniques employed by the company. Further updates should be expected as we approach the announced launch date.

The upcoming Apple Watch Series 9 might incorporate 3D printing technology as a trial for integrating the innovation into other product lines, with select models potentially adopting this gadget-enhancing technology. If successful, this smart-home-devices integration could potentially revolutionize the technology behind future Apple products.
