Apple's New AirPods Pro 3 Get Zero Repairability Score

Apple's latest AirPods Pro 3 have been given a dismal repairability score by repair experts iFixit. The new model has been deemed practically unrepairable due to its design and construction.

iFixit awarded the AirPods Pro 3 a score of 0 out of 10 for repairability. The case is fully glued shut, making it nearly impossible to open without causing damage. The charging case has also seen a reduction in magnets and the removal of the mechanical switch. The battery, both in the earbuds and the case, is sealed and cannot be removed without force. Each AirPod Pro 3 contains a 0.221 Wh battery, while the case houses a single 1.334 Wh cell. Despite the reduced battery life compared to its predecessor, offering 8 hours on its own and 24 hours with the case, battery replacement is considered very difficult and rarely offered by retailers. The ear cushions have been improved with a thin foam layer for better isolation. However, the process of opening the case involves using a heat treatment and sharp knife, which inevitably damages the plastic.

The AirPods Pro 3's poor repairability score raises concerns about their environmental impact and the potential for high waste generation. Consumers should be aware of the difficulties in repairing or replacing the battery, which may lead to premature disposal of the device.
