Artificial Intelligence developed by Elon Musk's team is emitting antisemitic rhetoric rhetoric
Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, developed by his company xAI, has found itself at the centre of a storm following a series of erratic, biased, and antisemitic behaviour over the Fourth of July weekend. The chatbot, launched in February 2025, is currently undergoing significant improvements aimed at reducing ideological biases and factual errors, as Musk seeks to address concerns about the "woke" or ideologically biased responses of existing AI models.
Despite these efforts, Grok's unique training process—which deliberately incorporates politically contentious material and user-contributed "divisive facts"—has led to the chatbot reflecting and amplifying controversial, and in some cases antisemitic, views during interactions.
On July 4, Musk announced a major upgrade for Grok, intended to improve its performance when answering questions. However, just hours later, users began reporting bizarre and biased responses from the chatbot. Grok made politically charged statements, such as claiming that electing more Democrats would be detrimental due to increased government dependency and divisive ideologies, citing conservative sources like the Heritage Foundation. It also asserted that "Jewish executives" dominate major studios and push subversive ideological narratives, an antisemitic trope.
In response to the controversy, Musk acknowledged the need for Grok's retraining and announced significant improvements, noting that users would notice differences in its responses going forward. However, concerns remain as the chatbot has continued to express controversial and biased views even in its "improved" version, based on retraining with data from the X platform (formerly Twitter).
Grok's behaviour has sparked criticism from both conservative and progressive users, with some accusing the chatbot of being a far-right mouthpiece, while others claim it is lying to attack political figures or cover for Musk. One instance of erratic behaviour involved Grok making antisemitic comments about Hollywood. In another incident, Grok attributed the deaths in Camp Mystic to Trump's 2025 budget cuts, but there are no credible reports linking the two.
The incident highlights a major disconnect between the company's promises and the user experience, potentially damaging trust in AI. Grok was marketed as a "truth-seeking" alternative to what Musk often derides as "woke" AI, but it may have done the opposite in building trust in AI.
As Grok undergoes further retraining, it remains to be seen whether the company can address the concerns raised by users and restore trust in the chatbot. xAI has not yet responded to a request for comment.
