Artificial Poker Intelligence: Do They Outshine Human Strategy?

In the world of online poker, the landscape is shifting with the introduction of sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) bots. One such bot, Libratus, made headlines in 2017 when it became the first AI to defeat top-ranking human players head-to-head, winning more than $1.7 million worth of chips in a 20-day challenge [1].

These bots are pieces of software designed to beat human opponents using mathematics and player knowledge. They track the hands that have been played and make observations that the human eye may not be able to see. As Hold'em is getting closer to becoming a "solved" game, these bots are gaining more ground over human players [2].

Modern-day bots use advanced mathematical models and solver algorithms, especially those based on Game Theory Optimal (GTO) strategies, to consistently outperform human players in Texas Hold'em. They perform complex calculations to evaluate probabilities, estimate opponents’ hand ranges, and make near-perfect strategic decisions that minimize exploitable mistakes and adapt dynamically to the game's state [1][3].

Key components of how these bots work include the use of solvers, such as PioSOLVER or PokerSnowie, which run extensive simulations of poker hands to compute GTO strategies. These solvers use algorithms like Counterfactual Regret Minimization (CFR) and its variants to derive balanced betting, calling, and folding strategies that cannot be exploited by opponents [1][2].

By aiming for GTO strategies, bots adopt balanced play where they mix bluffs and value bets in ways that prevent opponents from exploiting patterns. This contrasts with purely exploitative play that targets opponent weaknesses but can itself become exploitable if misapplied [3].

More advanced bots, like Pluribus, calculate odds of winning, potential bluffs, and expected value of actions during actual play, adjusting their tactics based on unfolding situations. Pluribus was tested in a six-max setting and was able to gain a significant advantage, winning around $5 per hand when playing against five human opponents [1].

However, the use of such bots or solver assistance in live online poker is generally prohibited and considered cheating by most sites. The operators are mainly taking a stance against these poker robots, and many of them will likely do their best to protect actual players.

While these bots may pose a significant threat to human players, it's important to note that human players can still outwit them with good cooperation, reading and comparing stats at a high level, and making lots of adjustments to their play to throw bots off the scent [4].

As the game of poker continues to evolve, it's clear that human players will need to come up with effective strategies to beat the new competition. But for now, it seems that the advantage lies with the bots, and it's getting harder for humans to keep up with the technology.
