Automaker Omoda expedites revisions on their latest 5-SUV line-up following damaging critiques
Omoda Refreshes 5 and E5 SUVs for Enhanced Handling, Cabin Quality, and Technology
Following critical reviews less than a year after their UK launch, Omoda, a Chery-owned brand, has launched refreshed versions of its 5 and E5 SUVs. The updates focus on handling, suspension, cabin quality, and in-car technology to provide a more dynamic driving proposition.
Improved Handling and Suspension
Both models have undergone significant changes to their suspension systems. The upgraded front suspensions with revised geometry aim to improve ride quality and provide a more dynamic driving experience. The previous issues with poor ride and handling balance, excessive body pitch, and a disconnect between steering response and body control have been addressed through these technical changes.
New front wheel hubs and bearings have been introduced, and brake linings have been refreshed to reduce issues like shimmying and harsh pitching during hard braking. The steering system has been revised, including the addition of a new electric steering setup and revisions to steering geometry for better driver feedback and cohesion.
Enhanced Cabin Quality and Interior
The petrol version of the Omoda 5 now shares the same interior design as the electric E5, improving perceived material quality with softer surfaces and better trim. Both cars feature dual large 12.25-inch screens angled towards the driver for improved visibility and usability. New seats with increased adjustability have been introduced, alongside a redesigned steering wheel and repositioned gear selector (now a column-mounted stalk behind the wheel), enhancing ergonomics.
The wireless charging pad has been moved to a more convenient location on the center console to improve accessibility while driving. The Omoda E5's cabin is described as "quite a bit more plush" compared to the Omoda 5, and these updates aim to close the gap between the two models.
Additional Improvements
The petrol Omoda 5 has removed its full-size spare wheel to maximize boot space, increasing luggage capacity from 372 to 430 liters. Overall, these upgrades aim to refine the driving experience, enhance interior comfort, and modernize technology offerings to better compete in a crowded SUV segment.
In summary, Omoda has responded swiftly to criticism by refining suspension and handling characteristics, upgrading cabin materials, modernizing the interior layout with larger screens and better ergonomics, and improving practical features like boot space and braking performance.
