X, the popular social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has introduced a new direct messaging system called XChat. This revamped messaging system, released in late July 2025, brings a suite of innovative features designed to enhance user experience, privacy, and engagement.

XChat is a potential major overhaul of the messaging system on the X platform. Some paid users have already reported access to this new system. The system is being introduced by X as a replacement for the current DMs system, aiming to transform X’s messaging into a robust platform comparable to established messaging apps.

Key features of XChat include:

  1. Typing indicators: Show when the other person is typing, similar to WhatsApp and Messenger.
  2. Emoji reactions: Quickly respond to messages with emojis like thumbs-up, hearts, laughs, etc.
  3. Replies and @mentions: In notifications and group chats, enabling targeted responses and better conversation tracking.
  4. Message divider: Visually separate long chats for easier navigation.
  5. Chat search: Quickly find specific messages or conversations within DMs.
  6. Block direct messages: From specific users without blocking their entire profile, improving privacy controls.
  7. Vanishing messages: Disappear after a set time for more private conversations.
  8. Voice notes, file sharing, and audio/video calls: Expanding communication modes without requiring phone numbers.

XChat is built with a "whole new architecture" using "Bitcoin-style" end-to-end encryption to secure chats[1][2][3][4][5]. This encryption is rumoured to be a key feature of XChat, along with passcode protection and group chats.

The broader launch of XChat is anticipated, with confirmation about its readiness given to TechCrunch by Nima Owji[6]. The new DMs system is being developed by the current version of Twitter (X), marking a significant step forward in the platform's efforts to prioritize user privacy and security.

The new direct messaging system, XChat, is set to revolutionize X's platform, bringing features like typing indicators, emoji reactions, and vanishing messages that are commonly found in social-media and entertainment applications. Additionally, this technology-driven communication platform is designed with robust security features, such as Bitcoin-style end-to-end encryption, aiming to provide a more secure and private user experience.
