Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk proposes to buy OpenAI for a staggering $97 billion.

Elon Musk, the entrepreneur behind SpaceX and Tesla, made a $97.4 billion bid to acquire OpenAI, the artificial intelligence (AI) research company he co-founded in 2015 with Sam Altman. However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman rejected the bid, instead suggesting OpenAI could buy Twitter for $9.74 billion.

The public fallout between Musk and Altman began in 2018 when Musk resigned from the OpenAI board, citing differences in vision and strategy. Since then, Musk has been competing with OpenAI through his own AI startup, xAI, which has launched the Grok chatbot to rival OpenAI’s GPT models.

Musk's bid specifically targeted the non-profit arm of OpenAI, which was valued at $157 billion in its most recent funding round. Musk emphasized the importance of maintaining OpenAI's original mission in a pointed press release regarding his bid.

The ongoing legal battle between Musk and OpenAI underscores the complex interplay between innovation, ethics, and corporate interests in the realm of AI development. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers presided over the courtroom showdown between Musk and OpenAI in 2021, when Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Altman, alleging that the company's pivot towards profit violated their initial agreement.

OpenAI's close collaboration with Microsoft positions it to remain a dominant AI leader. Microsoft has integrated OpenAI's latest AI model, GPT-5, into major products like Microsoft 365 Copilot, GitHub Copilot, and Azure AI Foundry. Musk criticized this development, claiming "OpenAI is going to eat Microsoft alive." However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman dismissed Musk’s warnings as typical of his frequent criticisms on social media, downplaying them as not serious concerns.

The rivalry between Musk and OpenAI highlights potential bifurcation in the AI landscape, with competing visions for AI development, regulation, and commercial use. OpenAI’s continued scaling of GPT-5 towards artificial general intelligence (AGI) suggests rapid AI capability improvements, raising competitive, ethical, and regulatory questions across the industry.

xAI seeks to challenge OpenAI with its own AI products, backed by significant funding and contracts, including a $200 million U.S. Department of Defense AI contract alongside OpenAI and others. The fate of OpenAI hangs in the balance, with Musk's bid representing a pivotal moment in the evolution of artificial intelligence and the tech industry.

The world watches with bated breath as the high-stakes drama unfolds, potentially shaping the future of artificial intelligence and the tech landscape as a whole. Whether OpenAI will return to its non-profit origins or embrace a for-profit future remains uncertain.
