Billionaire Moves Towards Titanic Two Years After Ocean's Gate Scandal
The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation has recently published a report detailing various deficiencies in Oceangate's approach to underwater navigation, following the tragic incident involving their submarine, the "Titan." Despite this, preparations for a new expedition to the Titanic's deep, dark depths are underway, with billionaire Larry Connor at the helm.
Connor, an Ohio businessman, has announced his plans for the expedition, which is expected to take place in the coming weeks. The cost of this venture is said to be a staggering $10 million. Connor is investing heavily in the project and is collaborating with Triton Submarines, a company known for its innovative underwater exploration vehicles.
Triton Submarines' Explorer sub, reminiscent of a Mr. Coffee machine, is designed with the intention of inspiring, educating, and advancing oceanic research. Patrick Lahey, CEO of Triton Submarines, has previously criticized the suboptimal business practices of OceanGate.
Last year, the BBC reported that Connor was intent on visiting the Titanic's wreck, with the help of Triton Submarines' CEO, Patrick Lahey. However, the identity of the billionaire and the source of the report were unknown at the time. Now, with the expedition on the horizon, Connor's involvement has been confirmed.
Two years ago, Stockton Rush was killed while piloting his experimental submarine towards the Titanic. The "Titan," operated by Oceangate, was a company that had made money by courting wealthy clients and taking them on trips to the undersea site. However, the company was widely viewed as disorganized, even before one of its voyages claimed five lives, including its CEO.
It's important to note that Triton Submarines does not offer private trips in its submarines. Instead, they are focused on advancing oceanic research and exploration. In fact, it was reported earlier this year that a "deep-pocketed donor" is funding DEEP, an effort to create a permanent human settlement under the ocean's waves.
As the world awaits Connor's expedition, it serves as a reminder of the allure and mystery that the deep sea holds, as well as the risks and challenges associated with exploring it. The Titanic, a symbol of a bygone era, continues to captivate the imagination and inspire explorers to venture into the unknown.
