Blue Whale Materials Lands $55M Grant to Boost U.S. Battery Recycling

Blue Whale Materials, a leading innovator in battery recycling, has received a significant boost with a $55 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. This funding will support a four-year expansion project at their Bartlesville facility, marking a substantial step towards enhancing domestic critical mineral production.

The expansion project, upon completion, is set to increase the plant's processing capacity to an impressive 50,000 tons per year. Robert Kang, Co-Founder and CEO of Blue Whale Materials, hailed this achievement as a milestone in fortifying domestic battery supply chains.

Blue Whale Materials, backed by sustainability-focused private investment firm Ara Partners, specializes in testing and grading of end-of-life batteries for remanufacturing and second life applications. The company's Bartlesville plant currently processes up to 14,000 tonnes of battery manufacturing scrap annually, producing BlacksandTM, a high-purity black mass containing cobalt, nickel, and lithium.

The company offers comprehensive services, including full-service collection, logistics, and sorting for end-of-life batteries. Construction continues on their full battery recycling process, expected to be operational by Q1 2026.

With the U.S. Department of Energy's substantial grant, Blue Whale Materials is poised to expand its critical mineral production significantly. Upon completion, the expanded facility is expected to contribute substantially to domestic battery supply chains, further solidifying the company's role in the sustainable resource development landscape.
