BMW's Electric SUV, the iX3, Sets Sail for the U.S., Boasting an Impressive 400-Mile Driving Range
The BMW iX3, a highly anticipated electric SUV, is set to make its way to American shores in 2026. This new model will join the competitive market of electric vehicles, going head-to-head with the Tesla Model Y and Mercedes GLC with EQ Technology.
Production of the iX3 in Europe begins in November 2022, with U.S.-bound vehicles continuing to come from Hungary. However, production in Mexico at the San Luis Potosi facility will start in 2027.
The initial variant of the iX3 in America will be the 50 xDrive, offering a range of approximately 400 miles and boasting 800-volt charging capabilities. This means a significant range increase can be achieved in a short amount of time with access to a 400-kW charging station. The iX3 50 xDrive is estimated to achieve about 400 miles on the EPA cycle.
BMW also mentions an entry-level version of the iX3, suggesting a lower starting price. The base version of the BMW iX3 in the USA is expected to have a starting price of around USD 60,000 when it becomes available, likely in summer 2026.
It's not yet confirmed if the U.S. will get the base model of the iX3, which may feature a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive setup. On the other hand, the long-wheelbase version of the iX3 will be exclusive to the Chinese market.
Europe and the U.S. are expected to lead sales of the iX3, while China will receive a special long-wheelbase version. Additional variants of the iX3 will be introduced at both ends of the lineup.
