Brandenburg Warns of Potential Russian Drone Threats Amid Rising Incidents
Brandenburg's Interior Minister, René Wilke, has expressed concern about potential drone threats, suggesting some could be controlled from Russia. This comes as Brandenburg police have seen a significant increase in drone sightings this year, with 84 incidents compared to just 26 in 2024. The minister emphasizes the need for cooperation to tackle this growing issue.
Brandenburg police have been proactive in addressing this issue, securing major events like the 35th anniversary of German unity in Saarbrücken with their drone defense unit. They are better equipped than other federal states, boasting special deployment technology and trained personnel for drone incidents. However, the minister acknowledges that cooperation between the federal government, states, and different authorities is crucial to effectively handle these incidents.
Wilke suspects some drones may be used for spying purposes, and while there are techniques to force drones to land or intercept them, shooting down may be necessary in certain cases. The increase in drone incursions is not only a concern for Brandenburg but for Germany and Europe as a whole, with six incidents recorded around Berlin Brandenburg Airport this year alone. The minister considers it possible that some drones are controlled from Russia, highlighting the need for vigilance and coordinated efforts to ensure public safety.
With drone incidents on the rise, Brandenburg's Interior Minister René Wilke is calling for enhanced cooperation to strengthen drone defense in Germany and Europe. While Brandenburg is well-equipped to handle potential drone incursions, the minister's concerns about foreign control highlight the importance of collective effort in addressing this growing threat.
