Bremen & Hamburg Harbors Kick Off Hydrogen Locomotive Project
A groundbreaking project, SH2under@ports, has kicked off in Bremen and Hamburg harbors. Backed by over 1.2 million euros from the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport, this initiative aims to convert locomotives to hydrogen propulsion, potentially revolutionizing port management operations and infrastructure.
The project, running until May 2024, is a collaboration between six industry and academic partners. Key players include the Hamburg Port Authority, Eisenbahnen und Verkehrsbetriebe Elbe-Weser GmbH, the Smart Mobility Institute, the Institute for Energy and Circular Economy, Alstom, and Bremenports. Together, they will explore the feasibility of powering locomotives with green hydrogen, using fuel cells to create a climate-neutral operation without overhead lines.
If successful, this switch could open up new perspectives for infrastructure changes in harbor management operations, supporting the Hamburg Port Authority's goal of CO2-neutral operations by 2035. The SH2under@ports consortium, which includes Siemens Energy and Shell, will focus on developing and implementing underground green hydrogen storage solutions to support sustainable port management operations.
The SH2under@ports project is set to investigate the prerequisites and requirements for converting to hydrogen drives, determine refueling conditions, and clarify safety and legal issues. The findings will be incorporated into a concrete implementation plan, not only benefiting Bremen and Hamburg harbors but also providing solutions for other ports and shunting operations.
