Britain to welcome the biggest European GPU assembly, following £11 billion Nvidia investment plans
Nvidia and Partners Invest £11 Billion in UK AI Infrastructure
In a significant move for the UK's artificial intelligence (AI) sector, tech giant Nvidia, along with its partners, has announced a combined investment of £11 billion in the country's AI ecosystem. This investment is expected to serve enterprise compute demand, researchers, and consumers alike.
The announcement was made by Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, and other executives such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who are expected to play a role in the week's proceedings. Nvidia's VP for enterprise, EMEA, David Hogan, stated that the UK has the right conditions for rapid AI growth and innovation.
Nvidia, along with its partners Nscale and CoreWeave, will be deploying chips across England and Scotland. Nscale, one of Nvidia's partners, will deploy 8,000 GPUs for OpenAI's 'Stargate UK' at the Cobalt Park site, with plans to increase this to 60,000 GPUs, a significant increase from the 10,000 GPUs they announced in June. This deployment will contribute to Nscale's global deployment of 300,000 Blackwell GPUs, with investments in the US, UK, Norway, and Portugal.
The UK's planned GPU deployment of 120,000 GPUs by the end of 2026 places it behind the US in terms of GPU deployment, with OpenAI targeting a deployment of two million GPUs for its Stargate project.
Nvidia's commitment to the UK AI infrastructure also includes the building of the most powerful supercomputer in the country with Microsoft. This supercomputer is expected to boost the UK's AI capabilities significantly.
The UK government is also investing in AI, with the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT) announcing a new AI growth zone in North East England, across Blyth and Cobalt Park outside Newcastle. This growth zone holds potential for a further £20 billion in investment from other partners. Google has also announced a £5 billion investment into UK infrastructure, including AI-related costs at Google DeepMind.
In addition, Google has announced a new data center in Broxbourne to expand its UK cloud availability. Blackstone has also announced a £10 billion data center at the Blyth site, scheduled for 2024.
With these investments, the UK is positioning itself as a major player in the global AI race, aiming to drive innovation, create jobs, and boost the economy.
