Britain's Best-Selling Book: Vickers Viscount

In the eleventh edition of AERO HISTORY, hosts Matthew Wolter and Wolfgang Borgmann took listeners on a captivating journey through the history of the Vickers Viscount aircraft model.

Wolfgang Borgmann, a renowned aviation journalist with over three decades of experience, led the discussion. His career in aviation journalism began with a traineeship and progressed to permanent positions before he became a freelance journalist and author 22 years ago.

Borgmann's work primarily focuses on aviation history, and he has published 32 books in both German and English on various aspects of the subject. As the editor of AERO INTERNATIONAL since February 2022, he oversees the Industry & Technology section within the team.

The Vickers Viscount, a groundbreaking aircraft model, was the world's first commercial aircraft to enter service in 1950 with a propeller-turbine jet engine (PTL), also known as a turboprop. This propulsion concept allows turboprops to fly faster than piston-engine aircraft but more economically than pure jets.

The Vickers Viscount was operated by various airlines worldwide, including Air Commerz, Austrian Airlines, Condor, and Lufthansa in the German-speaking region. This turboprop aircraft was a subject of discussion in the eleventh edition of the AERO HISTORY podcast.

Borgmann's passion for aviation was instilled in him by his parents, who were employed by airlines. His dedication to the field is evident in his extensive body of work and his continued role as an editor at AERO INTERNATIONAL.

The Vickers Viscount's innovative design and use of turboprop propulsion made it a significant milestone in aviation history. Its impact on the industry is still felt today, demonstrating the enduring influence of pioneering aircraft models.
