ChatGPT safeguards implemented by OpenAI for teenagers' security

OpenAI, the AI giant backed by Microsoft, has announced a series of new measures aimed at creating a safer experience for teen users on its popular chat model, ChatGPT. In a move to protect young users, OpenAI will default to the under-18 experience for any accounts where there is doubt about the user's age. This decision is part of OpenAI's commitment to prioritising safety over privacy and freedom for teenagers. To further enhance safety, parents will be able to link their ChatGPT account with their teen's account, giving them control over various aspects of their child's experience. This includes setting blackout hours for ChatGPT usage, managing which features to disable (such as memory and chat history), and controlling how ChatGPT responds to their teen with age-appropriate model behaviour rules. OpenAI is also working on technology to predict a user's age, and in some cases or countries, may ask for an ID to verify age. Recognising the importance of expert guidance, these strengthened protections for teens will be guided by input from various experts. In a significant step towards ensuring the well-being of its users, OpenAI has also announced that it will attempt to contact a user's parents if the system detects suicidal ideation. If contacting the parents proves unsuccessful, the authorities will be contacted in case of imminent harm. OpenAI understands that not everyone may agree with their approach to resolving the conflict between teen protection and freedom and privacy. However, they believe that these measures are a 'worthy tradeoff' for ensuring the safety of their younger users. In addition to these safety measures, OpenAI has also partnered with Walmart to train millions of workers in Artificial Intelligence. This partnership underscores OpenAI's commitment to making AI technology accessible and beneficial to a wide range of users. After acquiring a $100 billion equity stake, Microsoft now controls the AI giant OpenAI, providing a strong foundation for continued innovation and development in the field of AI.
