Apple has unveiled its latest operating system updates, iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025. These updates aim to refine user experiences and boost productivity within the Apple ecosystem.

iOS 26 introduces a fresh design overhaul, Liquid Glass, which offers a more expressive and delightful experience across the system. Enhanced capabilities, known as Apple Intelligence, are integrated throughout the system, making tasks easier and more personal. Improvements in the Phone and Messages apps help users stay connected, with better spam filtering and call handling. The new Safari on iOS offers a context menu that allows users to choose which SIM card to use for a call and to call from third-party apps like FaceTime, WhatsApp, Telegram, or Google Voice. Additionally, the new Safari offers desktop-level browsing history, making it easier to navigate compared to Chrome on Android.

Meanwhile, iPadOS 26 is designed to push the iPad's capabilities further. A new windowing system provides an intuitive and powerful system for managing apps, enhancing multitasking and productivity. The Files App has new features for organizing files, including customizable folders and background tasks for downloads. The Preview App allows users to view and edit PDFs with Apple Pencil Markup and AutoFill.

In comparison to Android 16, both iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 focus on refining user experiences and enhancing productivity within the Apple ecosystem. While Android traditionally offers more customization and widget usage, Apple's updates aim for fewer clicks and more intuitive software. iPadOS 26's new windowing engine for multitasking is a distinct feature not found in Android 16.

The new Liquid Glass design is focused on flexibility for the end user, offering more menus and shortcuts throughout the OS. Apple now provides direct access to the app's settings page in the global settings menu. The new platforms, iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, are visually and functionally radically improved over previous versions, making the iPhone and iPad bigger competitors than ever before to the best Android phones and tablets.

As Google continues to optimize Chrome for foldable phones, Apple is rumoured to launch an iPhone Fold late next year or early the following year. The updates to iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 are major leaps forward in functionality and usability, surprising many with their increased similarity to Android.

The Liquid Glass design in iOS 26 integrates technology, providing a more flexible and intuitive user experience across the operating system. Meanwhile, the new windowing system in iPadOS 26 reinforces the emphasis on entertainment and productivity, particularly in multitasking scenarios, distinguishing it from Android 16.
