Class-Action Lawsuit Filed Against Hyundai, Kia Over Defective EV Charging Ports

A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis in California. Owners of affected electric vehicles (EVs) claim defective charging ports cause excessive charging times and utility bill hikes. The lawsuit alleges that Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis continue selling vehicles with faulty charging ports despite knowing about the issue. Owners report charging sessions failing within 30 minutes, far from the advertised five to seven hours. The ports also overheat and cause charging rates to drop to as low as 28 amps instead of the promised 48 amps, doubling charging times. Hyundai's attempted fix, a software patch, further slows charging to ten hours or more in some cases. Owners face unexpectedly uncharged batteries and higher utility bills due to the protracted charging process. The lawsuit brings claims of fraud and violation of consumer protection laws. The lawsuit, filed in late July 2023, seeks compensation for affected vehicle owners and lessors. It involves Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, and the affected models include Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Genesis GV60, and Kia EV6.
