Cloudflare's 2024 Q2 DDoS Report: Attacks Evolve, Surge Year-over-Year
Cloudflare, Inc. has published its 2024 Q2 DDoS report, offering a glimpse into the evolving global DDoS attack threat landscape. The report reveals a decrease in the number of attacks quarter-over-quarter but a significant increase year-over-year.
In the first half of 2024, Cloudflare mitigated a total of 8.5 million DDoS attacks. This includes 4.5 million in Q1 and 4 million in Q2. Notably, the number of DDoS attacks decreased by 11% quarter-over-quarter but increased by 20% year-over-year.
The report highlights the increasing sophistication of DDoS attacks. Automated mitigation systems generated 19 million fingerprints in Q2, over ten times the normalized figure of 1.8 million. This surge is attributed to sophisticated and randomized HTTP DDoS attacks. Bashar Bashaireh, Managing Director & Head of Sales - Middle East and Türkiye at Cloudflare, emphasized the need for robust DDoS defense in light of these evolving threats.
In Q2, 2.2 million network-layer DDoS attacks and 1.8 million HTTP DDoS attacks were recorded. Libya was the largest source of DDoS attacks, followed by Indonesia and the Netherlands. Conversely, China was the most attacked country, followed by Turkey, Singapore, Hong Kong, Russia, Brazil, and Thailand.
Cloudflare mitigated a staggering 57 petabytes of network-layer DDoS attack traffic in Q2, equivalent to at least 162 times Netflix's entire catalogue. In May, 16% of attacked Cloudflare customers reported being threatened by a DDoS attack threat actor or subjected to a Ransom DDoS attack. The report underscores the importance of continuous vigilance and adaptation in cybersecurity strategies to counter the evolving DDoS attack threat landscape.
