Cogeco Media Revamps Network with Tieline Gateways for Enhanced Broadcasts

Cogeco Media, a prominent Canadian broadcasting corporation, has overhauled its content distribution and contribution network. The company engaged Tieline's expertise to design a new system, replacing outdated codecs with Tieline Gateways in eight cities. This move aims to standardize equipment, bolster support, and maintain high-quality, redundant, and secure connections.

Cogeco's journey began in 2021 when they collaborated with Rohde & Schwarz to develop a new network. Tieline was approached to design a robust distribution system using its SmartStream PLUS feature for redundancy. The Gateways, deployed in eight cities, serve multiple purposes including syndication, remote broadcasts, and inter-studio connections. These advanced codecs support AoIP transport using WheatNet-IP cards.

The transition was meticulous, involving initial testing, installation in two cities, and a gradual rollout across the network. Frédéric Vendette, Cogeco's director of technology operations, praised the Gateway codecs' flexibility and quick learning curve.

Cogeco Media's network upgrade, facilitated by Tieline and Rohde & Schwarz, has equipped the company with a modern, standardized, and efficient distribution system. This investment in technology ensures high-quality broadcasts for Cogeco's 22 stations, reaching approximately 5 million listeners weekly across Québec and Ontario.
