Leapmotor and FAW-Volkswagen Join Forces to Develop Electric Vehicles for Global Markets

Leapmotor, a Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, and FAW-Volkswagen have announced a strategic collaboration to jointly develop EV models for both domestic and overseas markets. This partnership leverages Leapmotor's B platform technology.

In the overseas market, Leapmotor and FAW Group will co-develop new EV models based on Leapmotor's B platform, aiming to introduce these vehicles for export sales. This collaboration mirrors Leapmotor's cooperation with Stellantis, indicating a strategic approach to penetrate foreign markets.

For the domestic Chinese market, Leapmotor is collaborating directly with FAW-Volkswagen to develop new EV models tailored for Chinese consumers.

The collaboration was formalized in March 2025 with a strategic memorandum of understanding signed at FAW's headquarters. This agreement encompasses a broader cooperation framework on passenger new energy vehicles (NEVs) and component collaboration.

Leapmotor has already launched its first B-series model, the B10 compact SUV, which serves as the foundation for the platform used in co-developed models. The B10, introduced on April 10, targets the popular compact SUV market with a starting price of RMB 99,800 ($13,940).

In addition to its collaboration with FAW, Leapmotor will also cooperate with FAW-Volkswagen. Through this partnership, FAW-Volkswagen aims to transform into electric and intelligent vehicles.

Leapmotor has entered 30 international markets through Stellantis' sales network in the past two years. The company has also exported more than 20,000 vehicles in the first half of this year.

The exchange rate is $1 = RMB 7.1574. The information about the collaboration and the failed investment comes from a report by local media outlet Jiemian. This is the first report by a major media outlet on the details of the cooperation since the two companies announced their partnership in March.

Leapmotor's in-house developed technical architecture and sales growth have proven its leading advantage in electrification and intelligence. The company's stock is traded under the symbol 9863 on the Hong Kong stock exchange.

FAW had previously considered investing in or acquiring a Chinese NEV startup, but the deal ultimately fell through. Stellantis invested €1.5 billion in Leapmotor in 2023, becoming the Chinese EV maker's largest external shareholder, owning about 20% of the company.

Leapmotor is holding a launch event for the B01 electric sedan, the second model in the B-series. The cooperation between Leapmotor and FAW-Volkswagen may result in FAW-Volkswagen developing and selling new models in the domestic market based on Leapmotor's technical architecture.
