Compare and contrast: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 - Focusing on the foldable cover screen features
Samsung Unveils Galaxy Z Flip 7: A Notable Upgrade Over Its Predecessor
Samsung has announced the release of the Galaxy Z Flip 7, a significant upgrade from its previous model, the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Both devices share similarities in terms of water and dust resistance, Armor Aluminum side rails, and a durable FlexHinge. However, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 offers several notable improvements across display, design, hardware, cameras, and software features.
Display Improvements
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 boasts a larger main foldable screen at 6.9 inches, compared to the 6.7 inches on the Flip 6. Both screens feature the same 1-120Hz refresh rate and 2600 nits peak brightness, making the Flip 7 brighter and more visible in sunlight. The cover screen on the Flip 7 is also significantly larger at 4.1 inches with a 120Hz refresh rate and 2600 nits brightness, compared to the Flip 6’s 3.4-inch 60Hz cover screen. This edge-to-edge design makes the outer screen more usable for apps and notifications.
Redesigned Design and Build
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 features a new thinner, more durable Armor FlexHinge that improves folding smoothness and reduces visible crease. The device is slightly larger but remains pocket-friendly with a thinner profile.
Hardware and Performance
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is powered by Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2500 (3nm) chipset, offering comparable real-world performance to the Flip 6’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (4nm). Both devices have 12GB LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512GB UFS 4.0 storage, but the Flip 7 supports newer connectivity standards like Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3. The Flip 7 also introduces Samsung DeX support (desktop mode), a feature lacking in the Flip 6.
Cameras and Software
While both devices share similar camera hardware (50MP main, 12MP ultrawide, 10MP front), the Flip 7 benefits from improved software processing and the new ProVisual Engine for better image quality, especially in challenging lighting. The software on the Galaxy Z Flip 7 includes One UI 8 and will feature Galaxy AI goodies and unique tricks like Gemini Live with camera support on the Flex Window cover screen.
Battery and Charging
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 has a larger battery capacity at 4300 mAh versus 4000 mAh on the Flip 6, with the same 25W wired and 15W wireless charging speeds.
Software Updates
Being the newer model, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will receive longer and newer software updates, including improved features that leverage the enhanced hardware and cover screen.
In summary, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 upgrades mainly focus on a larger and brighter main and cover display with higher refresh rate, a redesigned more durable hinge, modern chipset with advanced connectivity, better camera processing, larger battery, and new features like Samsung DeX. For these reasons, the Flip 7 is a notable step up over the Flip 6.
