MEET the game-changer for balcony power plants, the EcoFlow Stream Balcony Power Storage System. Equipped with smart features and intuitive AI, this powerhouse not only powers devices with over 800 watts of self-generated electricity but also intelligently manages your home's energy distribution in a cost-effective manner.
Similar to large PV systems, small balcony power plants often produce the most electricity when demand is low. The EcoFlow Stream leverages this and dynamic tariffs by storing excess or extra-cheap electricity and distributing it as needed in your home network during off-peak hours. Let's take a closer look at this revolutionary system and see if it lives up to its promises.
Multiple Models to Suit Your Needs
The EcoFlow Stream line features three base models, each with a capacity of 1.92 kilowatt-hours (kWh): the Stream Ultra, Stream Pro, and Stream AC Pro. These systems share a similar design, although modular expansion is possible for increased capacity. All models employ long-lasting lithium iron phosphate cells (LiFePO4), which are said to maintain at least 70% of their capacity after 6,000 charge cycles, potentially lasting up to 15 years with a 10-year warranty.
The Stream Ultra (€950) is an all-in-one device that includes an integrated bidirectional inverter and four connections for solar modules (MPPT). It can handle up to 2,000 W of solar input and deliver 1200W of AC power to connected devices.
The Stream Pro is a scaled-down version of the Ultra, with three solar connections and a maximum input power of 1500 W. The Stream AC Pro is a pure power storage system without solar connections, much like an extension battery for other Stream models or charging via the home network.
Streamlined and Rugged Design
The high-quality EcoFlow Stream batteries are designed to blend seamlessly into your home. Although the size may seem larger for their capacity, a tower-like design makes them easy to incorporate and less noticeable. The metallic look gives them a sleek, stylish appearance, albeit annoyingly, the LED strips for charge level indication cannot be turned off at night.
If needed, these durable batteries can be moved to a less prominent location, as they are IP65-protected against dust and water. EcoFlow provides wall mounts for a secure stand, and an integrated heating feature ensures operation at temperatures as low as –20 degrees.
Quick and Easy Installation
To fully test the potential of the EcoFlow Stream, we had an Ultra and two AC Pro units provided for our review. Setup could not be simpler: first, the solar system is connected to the Ultra, which is then linked to the home network via a normal Schuko socket.
Upon connection, the device is quickly recognized within the Ecoflow app. A firmware update may be necessary, after which, the Ultra is assigned to a room, and your self-powered storage and energy-saving device is operational.
Married in Harmony
Utilizing 400W of excess production instead of waste is now possible, thanks to the EcoFlow Stream. When the demand exceeds 800W, plug-in solar systems can't feed more into the home network. With the Stream, connecting another AC Pro device results in a combined output of 2300W. The unique feature of the Stream system is that it's possible to connect another storage device to an available socket within the home network, distributing power as needed.
Devices communicate wirelessly to manage power allocation effectively, and up to 2000W can be distributed this way. If a connected device requires more power, it's supplied from the network as usual.
Empowering Your Home with Solar and Dynamic Tariffs
In most cases, using additional grid power for charging is unnecessary if you have a dynamic power tariff. The EcoFlow Stream takes advantage of Dynamic Tariffs that adjust prices hourly based on stock market conditions. This means that when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing, prices are very low, but consumption is minimal.
Maximizing Energy Savings with AI
The KI-Modus-Premium (around €10/month or €100/year) can be used to optimize energy consumption further. This AI-based mode analyzes your energy consumption patterns, takes into account local solar forecasts, and creates custom energy plans for maximum savings. It's free for the first three months, and even the standard mode should suffice for most households.
For households that need to connect a Stream system to smart meters without a wireless connection, Smart Plugs can be used to provide the necessary data for optimized energy management within the Ecoflow app.
IV. The Future of Home Energy Management
The EcoFlow Stream system establishes itself as an excellent complement to balcony power plants, enabling the generated power to be used as efficiently as possible. It works even better when used with dynamic tariffs, although only a small percentage of households have access to this cost-effective solution.
Even though a battery storage system can be profitable for households with fixed network tariffs, proper dimensioning is essential to recoup costs in approximately six and a half years, given an average daily self-production of an additional kilowatt-hour of solar energy per day over a year at a total price of 40 cents.
