Cyberpunk 2077 follow-up initiates early production stages with Phantom Liberty surpassing 10 million copies in sales
Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Enters Pre-Production at CD Projekt RED
CD Projekt RED has announced that the sequel to the critically acclaimed game, Cyberpunk 2077, is now in the pre-production phase. This development was disclosed in the studio's latest investor update.
The current team working on the sequel consists of 96 members, highlighting a significant increase from the 56 employees who were initially assigned to the project in 2024. The game, codenamed "Orion," is being led by a team from CD Projekt RED's Boston studio, which includes several leads who previously worked on the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion.
In the same investor update, CD Projekt confirmed that Phantom Liberty has surpassed 10 million copies sold, with an additional 2 million copies sold since the previous milestone announced in November 2024.
Elsewhere, the Boston office at CD Projekt RED is also working on a Witcher spinoff codenamed Sirius, and collaborating with Fool's Theory to develop a remake of the first Witcher game utilizing Unreal Engine 5.
While the main bulk of CD Projekt RED's developers are currently engaged in the full production of The Witcher 4, the studio's upcoming title, the development of Cyberpunk 2077's sequel will gradually expand as it progresses through the pre-production stage.
The original game, Cyberpunk 2077, along with the Phantom Liberty expansion, is currently available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is scheduled for June 5, 2025, and the game is also being ported to Mac.
The setting for the sequel, tentatively titled Cyberpunk 2, is described as "Chicago gone wrong," providing a distinct aesthetic from the original game's Night City. The game will be developed using Unreal Engine 5, promising immersive gameplay and enhanced visuals. Mike Pondsmith, creator of the original Cyberpunk tabletop RPG, is involved in providing feedback but is not leading the development.
