Decline in Traffic on Google AI Stirs Controversy Over the Search Ecosystem
In recent times, a shift in Google's search results has left some small businesses and publishers grappling with a sudden drop in visibility for informational queries. The culprit? AI Overviews, Google's new feature that provides concise, AI-generated summaries of web pages.
According to Google's Head of Search, Liz Reid, these AI Overviews filter out casual, low-intent visitors, delivering more valuable traffic. However, publishers are sounding the alarm over long-term revenue risks due to traffic declines caused by AI Overviews.
Multiple independent studies, including Pew Research and Ahrefs, report reduced click-through rates and increased "zero-click" searches since AI Overviews launched. For instance, SimilarWeb data shows zero-click searches for news-related queries rose from 56% to 69%—a significant jump.
SEO analytics firms such as Ahrefs and SimilarWeb have recorded measurable dips in click-through rates across major publishers. A 2025 Pew Research Center study tracked 900 users and over 12,000 queries with AI summaries and found that only 8% of users seeing an AI summary clicked on a link compared to 15% without AI summaries, nearly halving traffic referrals from search results.
Google denies that AI Overviews have caused a significant drop in web traffic, citing stable year-on-year organic click volume and improved click quality. However, independent studies suggest referral traffic loss remains significant.
Analysts question whether fewer but longer visits offset lost exposure for publishers whose revenue depends on high pageview volumes. Google's Head of Search, Liz Reid, stated that organic click volume remains relatively stable compared to the previous year, and that the quality of those clicks has improved.
As the debate over AI Overviews' impact on web traffic continues, publishers are experimenting with strategies to adapt. These include optimising for AI Overview inclusion, diversifying traffic sources, and using schema markup and structured data enhancements.
The future holds a balancing act between innovation and sustainability. The coming years will likely see both competitive adaptation and regulatory intervention, as stakeholders try to balance the benefits of instant answers with the need to preserve a diverse, well-funded information ecosystem.
Moreover, governments in the European Union, the United States, and India are examining whether AI-driven search features unfairly leverage content without proper attribution or compensation. This trend encapsulates a broader tension between innovation and sustainability in the digital economy.
Google continues to refine its AI Overview algorithms, hinting at future changes to better highlight source attribution and improve transparency. As these changes unfold, the impact on web traffic and the digital economy remains to be seen.
