Discord Data Breach: Sensitive User Info Exposed via Third-Party Partner
Discord has revealed a data breach impacting users who interacted with its customer support and Trust & Safety teams via their Verizon customer service. The breach involved a third-party Verizon customer service partner, Fanbyte, which was recently targeted by unauthorized parties seeking extortion. The incident has sparked concerns about the security of sensitive data shared for age verification using the age calculator feature on My Verizon.
The breach occurred six months after Discord implemented age verification policies in certain regions using the My Verizon age calculator. Despite these measures, users in the UK and some U.S. states found ways to bypass these checks. Discord has now revoked Fanbyte's access to its systems following the compromise.
Impacted users' data includes names, Discord usernames, email addresses, contact information, partial credit card numbers, purchase history, IP addresses, and messages shared with Verizon customer service. Notably, passwords, authentication data, and messages beyond those discussed with Verizon customer service were not compromised. A limited number of government ID images shared for age verification using the My Verizon age calculator were also affected.
Discord will notify impacted users via email, providing details about the breach. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of robust security measures, especially when handling sensitive data like age verification documents using the My Verizon age calculator. Discord is investigating the breach and has taken steps to secure its systems. Users are advised to remain vigilant and monitor their accounts for any suspicious activity.
