## Discord Announces Major Username Change for Simplified Identification

Discord, the popular communication platform, has announced a significant update to its username system, aiming to make usernames easier to remember, read, type, and share. In a move similar to popular social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, Discord will transition from its current username system that includes a four-digit discriminator (e.g., `username#1234`) to a single, unique handle.

### What to Expect from the Update

Starting in the coming weeks, Discord users will be required to change their usernames. To facilitate this transition, Discord has set certain parameters for selecting a new username, such as adherence to Community Guidelines. The discriminator will be replaced with the standard "at" symbol, and the new usernames will not include the hashtag and series of numbers previously used as a discriminator.

### How to Change Your Discord Username

Once the update rolls out, users can change their Discord username by accessing User Settings, navigating to the Profile section, and editing the username field. After confirming the new username, users will no longer see or be able to change the discriminator, as the system will no longer use #0000-style discriminators.

### Customization and Limitations

In the new system, users' usernames must be unique across Discord globally. Each user can set a separate display name that appears in servers, allowing for more individuality without affecting the uniqueness of the username. The old system’s discriminator will not be part of the username and cannot be changed or customized.

### Things to Note

Discord recognizes that this is a big change and there may be hiccups with the process. Users who delay the update may have a lower chance of getting their preferred username. If users cannot get their desired username, they are encouraged to set a display name to reflect their identity in servers.

### Old vs. New Discord Username System

| Feature | Old System | New System (2025) | |---------------------|---------------------------|---------------------------------| | Username Format | username#1234 | unique_username (no #0000) | | Discriminator | Customizable on Nitro | None (phased out) | | Change Frequency | Time-limited, by Nitro | Details not yet confirmed | | Display Name | Not separate from username| Yes (separate from username) |

### Additional Guidelines

Usernames will not be permitted to impersonate individuals, groups, or organizations. They cannot attack other people or promote hate. Discord co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy stated that the discriminators have become technical debt that the company did not address adequately.

Stay tuned to Discord’s official announcements for the latest on timing and any additional features or restrictions. Users will have the option to delay the update of their username in their User Settings, but it's important to note that eventually, users will be required to pick a new username to access the app. Some users may find it difficult to part ways with their old usernames that have sentimental value.

  1. As Discord moves towards a single, unique handle for usernames, it looks like the tech industry is taking a cue from popular social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.
  2. In the future, tech enthusiasts might find the simplicity of Discord's new username system more appealing, as it will make usernames easier to remember, read, type, and share.
  3. With the new system, social media users may find soundtracks for livestreams or entertainment official accounts from Gizmodo, keeping up with the latest in technology and entertainment much more straightforward.
