Drone sightings temporarily disrupt Munich Airport - Drone Disruption at Munich Airport Affects 3,000 Passengers

Munich Airport faced a significant disruption last night due to drone sightings, leading to the temporary closure of runways. The incident, which occurred during the night flight ban for regular passenger traffic, resulted in numerous cancellations and affected around 3,000 passengers.

The German air traffic control authority closed the runways in the late evening after several people reported seeing a drone near the airport. Later sightings were confirmed over the airport grounds. This led to the cancellation of 17 flights on Thursday evening, with 15 diverted to other airports. Around 20 to 32 flights were impacted in total.

The disruption caused chaos for passengers, with hundreds spending the night on camp beds in terminals and others being taken to hotels. The responsible party remains unknown, and federal and state police are currently investigating. They searched the area without success and deployed a police helicopter. This incident is part of a growing trend, with 1,444 drone disruptions recorded at German airports by the end of August this year. Frankfurt Airport, the largest German hub, has already experienced 35 disruptions this year.

Flight operations resumed early in the morning, but the incident has raised concerns about potential impacts on the ongoing Munich Oktoberfest, a major event that attracts international visitors.

The drone incident at Munich Airport has highlighted the growing issue of drone disruptions at German airports. With the investigation ongoing, authorities are working to prevent future incidents and ensure the safety of air traffic. Passengers are advised to check their flight status before traveling.
