E-reader Sagem makes its debut

The French company Sagem has recently introduced a new e-reader to the market, the Sagem Binder. This device, available in France and Italy, is a white-labelled product that offers a unique blend of compact design and versatile features, making it an intriguing alternative to popular e-ink e-readers like the Kindle.

Key Features of the Sagem Binder

The Sagem Binder stands out with its compact, lightweight design, boasting a high-resolution E Ink display tailored for clear text reading and long battery life, much like other e-ink readers. It supports multiple e-book formats, including TXT, Epub, PDF, HTML, JPEG, PNG, BMP, and MP3 files. The device features touchscreen navigation and comes with Wi-Fi connectivity for downloading books, as well as expandable storage options via a microSD card up to 32 GB.

Comparing the Sagem Binder with Kindle Devices

When compared to Kindle devices, Sagem Binder e-readers generally offer comparable E Ink technology, more open support for various e-book formats, and a more affordable price point. However, Kindle devices tend to have more robust ecosystem integration with Amazon services, better software support, and access to features like Kindle Unlimited, Audible integration (some models), and superior firmware updates.

Advantages of the Sagem Binder could include flexibility in file format compatibility and cost savings, while Kindle's advantages lie in ecosystem depth, brand support, and often better hardware refinement.

Availability and Pricing

The Sagem Binder e-reader weighs around 240 grams and measures 152 x 123 x 10.7 mm. In Italy, the eBook, which is the white-labelled version of the Binder, goes on sale from November. The French version of the Binder, known as the FnacBook, is currently available in France through the retailer FNAC.

As for global availability, no specific information is given about the Binder's availability in other countries. However, the Binder or its white-labeled versions may be available in more countries in the future.

Sipix e-Paper Display and 3G Connectivity

Unlike many e-readers that use e-ink technology, the Sagem Binder features a Sipix e-paper display. The device also comes with an integrated 3G module in the French version, courtesy of carrier SFR.

Jérôme Nadel of Sagem Wireless stated that the Binder e-reader solves the conundrum of either having a smaller form factor with fewer features or a fully connected experience with a larger device.

In conclusion, the Sagem Binder offers a compelling alternative to popular e-ink e-readers like the Kindle, with its compact design, versatile features, and competitive pricing. For those seeking a device that balances portability and functionality, the Sagem Binder might just be the perfect e-reader.

The Sagem Binder, with its unique Sipix e-paper display and 3G connectivity, differentiates itself from other e-ink e-readers like the Kindle by offering a more compact design without compromising on key features. Additionally, its versatile support for various e-book formats and competitive pricing make it an attractive option among gadgets and technology enthusiasts.
