Eaton set to purchase solid-state transformer tech company Resilient Power Systems
In a significant move to bolster its presence in the electric vehicle (EV) market and beyond, Eaton, an intelligent power management company, has agreed to acquire Resilient Power Systems [1][2]. Based in Austin, Texas, Resilient Power Systems specializes in solid-state transformer-based technology and has been backed by venture capital firms, including Energy Transition Ventures.
Resilient's medium voltage solid-state transformers (SSTs) are a next-generation solution in high-power, direct current (DC) applications in the EV market. These transformers are expected to be future enablers for higher power density, more efficient, and flexible power distribution in data centers, port electrification, and battery energy storage systems [1][2][3][4].
The SSTs allow increased power density and improved power distribution efficiency and reliability in data centers, facilitating faster deployment and reduced operational costs [3][4]. In port electrification, they enable electrification by providing scalable and efficient medium-voltage DC power solutions to support high-power electric equipment and vehicles, contributing to grid modernization in these critical infrastructure zones [1][4]. Resilient’s SSTs offer compact, direct grid connection for battery energy storage, increasing modularity and flexibility while reducing infrastructure complexity and costs [1][2][4].
Mike Yelton, President, Americas Region, Electrical Sector of Eaton, stated that there's huge opportunity for future applications of Resilient's transformers in data centers, port electrification, and battery energy storage. He believes that the acquisition will allow Eaton to leverage these SST technologies along with its manufacturing and service capabilities to scale these applications and meet growing market demands in EV infrastructure, data centers, port electrification, and energy storage [1][2][3][4].
The acquisition of Resilient Power Systems by Eaton will also enable clients to deploy EV fleet and public charging stations more quickly and efficiently. The ultra-compact EV charging depots offered by Resilient connect directly to existing distribution grids, making deployment easier and more cost-effective [5].
The transaction between Eaton and Resilient Power Systems is expected to close in the third quarter of 2025 [6]. This strategic move is set to accelerate infrastructure deployment in various sectors by offering modular, grid-connected energy systems suitable for evolving DC power needs.
