Electric vehicle charging stations witness a 27% increase within twelve months
UK Sees Rapid Growth in Electric Vehicle Charging Points
The United Kingdom is witnessing a significant increase in electric vehicle (EV) charging points, particularly in regions such as the North East, East of England, West Midlands, and Yorkshire and The Humber.
According to the UK Future of Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, the growth is driven by several key factors. These include the rising EV sales penetration, expansion of public charging infrastructure, regional policies and incentives, business adoption and green initiatives, technological advancements, and the need to address gaps in home charging accessibility.
The UK has added more than 17,000 chargepoints to its network in the past year, bringing the total to over 82,000. The North East of the UK has seen the fastest growth, with a 41% increase, while the East of England now boasts 1,778 public chargers, a 40% increase. Yorkshire and The Humber now has 1,044 public chargers, marking a 34% increase.
Minister Greenwood emphasised that lowering upfront costs is part of the strategy to increase electric vehicle adoption. She also stated that the UK is making progress towards expanding its charging network across the country, helping to alleviate range anxiety.
Notably, the West Midlands has 2,138 public chargers, representing a 39% growth. Meanwhile, the growth in chargepoints in Northern Ireland is the slowest among all regions in the UK, with an 11% increase to 66 public chargers.
The UK is adding a new chargepoint to its network every half an hour, reflecting the aggressive pace of infrastructure development. However, specific information about the growth in chargepoints in Scotland, Wales, or other regions beyond the mentioned four, as well as in cities and towns within Northern Ireland, was not available.
The growth in chargepoints in the UK has been substantial, with a 27% increase in the past year. This aligns with the national trend of a 30% increase in total charging points, supporting the expanding EV market.
