Electric Vehicle Market Chronicles: Tesla Model Y Leads as Best-Selling Battery Electric Vehicle in Europe for 2024, Yet Tesla Struggles Initially in 2025 Sales

Tesla Model Y's Mixed Fortune in Europe's Stock Market

The Tesla Model Y, Europe's best-selling battery-electric vehicle (BEV) in 2024, experienced a remarkable success last year with strong demand in key markets like the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, and Norway. However, the vehicle's 2025 performance has taken a turn, particularly in France and Germany.

In January 2025, the Model Y faced a slow start, with only 1,141 vehicles registered in France—a sharp drop of 63% compared to the same month last year. This slowdown in sales could be attributed to political controversies surrounding CEO Elon Musk, as some European consumers and businesses have expressed backlash due to his vocal support for controversial political figures.

In Germany, the situation was similar, with a significant decline in vehicle registrations. The overall BEV market in France saw a comparatively modest drop of 0.5% in January 2025, but the decline in Tesla's sales significantly outpaced this movement.

Despite these challenges, the Model Y remained a dominant force in Europe's BEV market, accumulating over 209,000 registrations in 2024. The Model Y ranked as the fourth most registered car overall in Europe, according to Jato Dynamics, and the Model 3 secured a second place showing with nearly 113,000 registrations.

Interestingly, the Model Y lost its title as Europe's overall best-selling vehicle to the Dacia Sandero in 2024. This shift could be due to the overall BEV market share dropping slightly from 15.7% in 2023 to 15.4% in 2024.

As the year progresses, it remains to be seen how Tesla will navigate these challenges and continue its growth in Europe's competitive automotive market.
