Electrical evaluation of the Porsche Cayenne reduces development timeline by approximately 20%
Porsche is gearing up for an electric revolution, as the renowned automaker announces a series of electrified SUVs set to hit the market in the near future.
In Spring 2023, an extensively updated Cayenne is scheduled to make its debut. The vehicle, undergoing extreme testing, will be electric, joining Porsche's growing fleet of electric vehicles. The new Cayenne's development time has been reduced by 20% due to the extensive use of virtual testing, a testament to Porsche's commitment to innovation.
The testing process for the electric Cayenne is meticulous. While virtual tests are conducted at Porsche's Weissach development center using digital prototypes, virtual reality simulations, and real-time digital testing methods, human verification is still required in extreme temperatures, such as 50 °C in the desert and -35 °C in Scandinavia.
Porsche's new composite test bench allows for the simultaneous testing of the drive, energy management, and charging system, ensuring the electric Cayenne delivers the performance and charging capabilities expected of a Porsche.
The electric Cayenne is not the only electric SUV on Porsche's horizon. The Macan, a popular model in Porsche's lineup, is set to follow suit, while a new 'K1' range-topping electric SUV has also been confirmed for production.
The 'K1' SUV, yet to be named, will join the ranks of the already confirmed 718 Boxster and Cayman Electric in Porsche's electric lineup. The lessons learned from the successful Taycan are being applied to the development of these new electric SUVs, promising a seamless transition into the electric age.
It's not just the SUVs that are electrifying. Porsche is heavily investing in electric vehicles, reflecting a global shift towards sustainable mobility. The petrol and hybrid versions of the Cayenne will continue beyond 2030, providing customers with a choice of powertrains.
Looking further ahead, the fourth-generation electric Cayenne is confirmed for a 2025 release. The virtual testing of the vehicle involves digitised routes from the Nurburgring to everyday traffic, real-time simulations, and virtual environments, ensuring the vehicle is ready for any road condition.
With the electric Cayenne Electric scheduled for release later this year, Porsche is set to continue its electrifying journey, delivering high-performance electric vehicles that combine tradition and innovation.
