Eleven ultra-fast charging stations are being added to Newfoundland and Labrador for electric vehicles.
Newfoundland and Labrador is set to boost its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure with the addition of 11 ultra-fast charging stations along the Trans-Canada Highway in 2025. These high-speed charging points, operated by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, are designed to significantly reduce charging times, allowing compatible vehicles to charge up to 80% in less than 20 minutes.
The announcement was made during Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro's annual general meeting in St. John's on Tuesday. Among the confirmed locations for these new stations is Conne River, with further details regarding other locations yet to be disclosed.
CEO Jennifer Williams emphasized that the shift towards electric vehicles in the province is accelerating, not slowing down. She stated that there is a misconception that the demand for electric vehicles is decreasing, but they are seeing an increase in demand. The majority of charging sessions in 2024 were recorded along the Trans-Canada Highway.
While the latest plans do not include specific mentions of official Tesla Supercharger stations being planned for Newfoundland and Labrador, the new charging stations will feature ultra-fast chargers capable of supporting Tesla vehicles with appropriate adapters. However, for dedicated Tesla Supercharger infrastructure, there is no current public announcement for the province as of mid-2025.
The expansion of ultra-fast charging stations is part of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro's broader efforts to support the province's transition to cleaner transportation. Access to fast, reliable charging has become a key focus for governments and utilities as electric vehicle adoption increases.
N.L. Hydro reported a 40% increase in usage of its EV charging network in 2024 compared to the previous year. With the addition of these new ultra-fast charging stations, the province aims to cater to the growing demand for electric vehicles and make EV ownership more convenient for residents and visitors alike.
