ESA Boosts Europe's Cybersecurity with €50m SAGA Mission
The European Space Agency (ESA) has taken a significant step towards bolstering Europe's cybersecurity awareness. It has signed a €50m contract with Thales Alenia Space for the preliminary design phase of the Security And cryptoGrAphic (SAGA) mission. This innovative project aims to protect classified government communications and critical infrastructure against emerging cyber threats.
SAGA is a key component of the broader European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI), aiming to create a continent-wide quantum network. It will serve as a backbone for cybersecurity awareness across vital sectors such as healthcare, energy, defence, and emergency response. The mission is designed for the protection of classified and critical data, positioning it as a vital tool for safeguarding national and public safety in Europe.
The SAGA mission will demonstrate quantum key distribution via satellites. This technology ensures unprecedented levels of security for encryption keys, enhancing the resilience of Europe's digital infrastructure. Thales Alenia Space CEO, Hervé Derrey, expressed pride in contributing to Europe's technological independence through the advancement of optical and quantum technologies. ESA and its partners aim to complete SAGA's preliminary design review within two years, followed by manufacturing and deployment.
The €50m contract for the SAGA mission was signed by Antonio Sturiale of Thales Alenia Space and Laurent Jaffart of ESA, with European Commission representative Aymard de Touzalin in attendance. This marks a significant milestone in Europe's quest for enhanced cybersecurity awareness, with SAGA set to play a crucial role in protecting sensitive communications and critical data across various sectors.
