Ethereum [ETH] continues to steer the crypto world in 2025, driven by its influential co-founder, Vitalik Buterin. Ahead of the curve on resilience and decentralization, he sets his sights on both base (layer 1, L1) and L2 levels.

Recently, he called upon rollups (Ethereum scaling solutions) to focus on robust and battle-tested proof systems, rather than solely relying on Stage 2 milestones for mitigating risks. He emphasized,

"Stage 2 isn't the be-all and end-all; the quality of the underlying proof system is crucial too."

For the unacquainted, Stage labeling ( Stage 0 to Stage 2) represents the level of decentralization in a rollup. However, how the rollups manage off-chain transactions (the proof system) is as important under Buterin's guidance.

Suggestions for Battle-Hardened Rollups

Based on the attached chart from Buterin, a rollup would progress from Stage 0 to Stage 2 (more secure and decentralized) if it becomes increasingly resistant to breaking (reducing the probability of the proof system failing).

According to L2 data aggregator, L2 Beat, only three rollups had reached Stage 2 as of May 2025. Meanwhile, seven rollups, including Base, Unichain, and Arbitrum, were at Stage 1, indicating decentralization as per current evaluation. However, those at Stage 1 could potentially carry inherent risks under Buterin's new model if their proof systems lack battle-testing.

Projections for Ethereum: $2.2K Target Ahead?

Crypto analytics firm Amberdata forecasts ETH could touch $2.2K in the medium term. This optimistic outlook is attributed to increased bids for call options (bullish bets) for $1800 and $2200 strike prices for May and June expiries, respectively.

In addition, Amberdata expects the ETH/BTC ratio to bounce back soon.

"A rebound in the ETH/BTC ratio is possible, and ETH could easily surge above $2,200 in the medium term as risk-assets recover everywhere."

On the price chart, the $1800 level aligns with an April high and a resistance level (red), potentially flipping into support for prices to advance towards $2K or $2,2K (February lows) as the next overhead targets.

While the daily RSI shows increased buying pressure since mid-April, whale positioning remains sluggish as shown by the red bars on the Whale vs. Retail Delta indicator. A more prominent whale position (green) could signal a potential for robust upward momentum.

  • Ethereum [ETH] remains the dominant force in the crypto world in 2025, under the leadership of its co-founder, Vitalik Buterin.
  • Buterin has emphasized the importance of both base (layer 1, L1) and L2 levels for Ethereum's scaling solutions, such as rollups.
  • According to Buterin, rollups should focus on robust and battle-tested proof systems, not just meeting Stage 2 milestones.
  • Amberdata predicts ETH could reach $2.2K in the medium term, thanks to increased bids for bullish bets at $1800 and $2200 strike prices for May and June expiries.
  • However, the ETH/BTC ratio needs to bounce back for ETH to reach the projected $2.2K, as per Amberdata's projections.
  • While increased buying pressure since mid-April is shown by the daily RSI, whale positioning remains sluggish, potentially signaling a more prominent whale position for a robust upward momentum.
Buterin underscores the significance of proof system robustness in assessing Ethereum rollup decentralization and associated risks.
