The Ethereum network is gearing up for its Fusaka upgrade, a significant milestone in its journey towards improved scalability and network efficiency. Scheduled for mainnet rollout on December 3, 2025, the upgrade will focus on enhancing Ethereum's handling of high-throughput demands, particularly from layer-2 rollups and data-heavy applications.

The Fusaka upgrade will consist of thorough bug bounty campaigns, extensive code audits, and a two-phase approach to increasing blob capacity. The first phase, starting with the BPO forks, aims to more than double the network's blob data capacity. The first BPO fork will increase block capacity from the current 6/9 blobs to a new 10/15 range approximately two weeks after mainnet deployment. A second BPO fork will raise capacity further to 14/21 blobs per block on January 7, 2026.

Validator operators are advised to prepare for greater storage and bandwidth requirements as the network scales up its capacity. However, for most end users and businesses relying on Ethereum-powered applications, there shouldn't be any major disruptions. Existing functionality will remain intact during the Fusaka upgrade, ensuring continuity for businesses using Ethereum.

The Fusaka upgrade testnet schedule includes three phases: Holesky on October 1, Sepolia on October 14, and Hoodi on October 28. Each testnet will run the complete suite of Fusaka upgrades for thorough validation. This means testing on all three testnets occurs in October, roughly one to two months before mainnet deployment.

In addition to scaling up gas limits and strengthening support for the layer-2 ecosystem, the Fusaka upgrade priorities also include improved scalability, better network efficiency, and stronger data availability. Key stakeholders are actively discussing proposals such as PeerDAS, aiming to streamline data availability and efficiency.

Experts like Christine D. Kim have been vocal about the upgrade's two-stage approach to expanding blob capacity. Fusaka signals Ethereum's commitment to more responsive improvements and effective scaling, reinforcing key principles like decentralization and efficiency.

With the Fusaka upgrade, Ethereum takes a significant step towards meeting the demands of a growing decentralized economy, setting the foundation for the next wave of Ethereum developments.
