EU Committee Visits Taiwan Amid Rising Hybrid Threats and China Tensions

A high-ranking EU committee visited Taiwan recently, part of a broader effort to align democracies facing similar hybrid threats. The trip comes amid rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait and shared concerns about external interference in democratic processes.

The EU maintains a 'One China' policy but supports Taiwan's participation in international organisations. Taiwan, meanwhile, has accused China of disinformation campaigns and election meddling. The European Parliament's Democracy Shield committee, investigating such threats, made a fact-finding visit to Taiwan.

President Lai Ching-te warned of increasing threats to both Taiwan and the EU, including efforts to undermine democratic institutions. He characterised Taiwan as on the 'frontline of the world's defence of democracy' and committed to sharing its experience with like-minded partners. Lai underlined shared values between Taiwan and the EU, calling for greater cooperation in safeguarding democratic governance.

The EU-China summit this week will address trade disputes and geopolitical tensions, including support for Taiwan as a democratic partner. Both Taiwan and the EU have faced information interference and infiltration, making cooperation crucial to defend democratic institutions.
