EU Leaders to Discuss 'Drone Wall' Defense Initiative at Upcoming Summit

EU leaders are set to discuss a range of defence initiatives, including a potential 'Drone Wall' system, at the upcoming European Political Community summit in Denmark. The talks come amidst recent drone sightings and temporary airport closures in the country, prompting a ban on civilian drone flights. The European Commission has already proposed four flagship defence projects, including the drone wall, to be implemented urgently.

The proposed drone wall aims to create a layered approach to detect, track, and shoot down threats. It would combine autonomous AI surveillance, integrated drone defense systems, multilayer sensor networks, and mobile drone interceptors. The system is primarily intended for deployment along borders with Russia and Belarus. Financing for this ambitious project is planned through a mix of European and national funds, with Estonia already committing nearly 12 million euros over three years. This investment is part of a broader EU defence goal to be achieved by 2030.

In addition to discussing the drone wall, EU leaders will also focus on providing financing to Ukraine and keeping its EU accession process moving forward. The European Council President, Antonio Costa, is expected to propose amending accession rules to allow for qualified majority voting in the opening of accession clusters. The summit will bring together EU leaders and over a dozen heads of state from across Europe to discuss security, economy, and migration.

The European Political Community summit in Denmark is poised to make significant strides in EU defence initiatives, with the potential drone wall system and support for Ukraine taking centre stage. These discussions could lead to enhanced security measures and progress in EU integration.
