Stuttgart, a city known for its automotive industry, is taking strides towards a greener future by promoting electric car-sharing. The city council has launched a funding program, "Charging Infrastructure for Electric Car-Sharing," to accelerate the development of charging infrastructure for electric car-sharing.

The program, which provides a subsidy for each charging point, capped at 5,000 euros, aims to reduce initial costs for setting up charging infrastructure and make electric car-sharing offers more attractive. This move is part of Stuttgart's broader strategy to reduce parking pressure and traffic, strengthen the environmental network, and promote sustainable mobility.

The city's efforts are not limited to financial support. Stuttgart is also providing parking spaces for car-sharing providers, with 18 spots designated exclusively for electric car-sharing vehicles and equipped with charging stations. In fact, there are now more car-sharing stations in the public than in the private space in Stuttgart.

Stuttgart is part of the EU project STEER-NWE, which aims to pilot-test electric car-sharing in five residential projects in the city. Eleven partners from six countries are involved in the project across Europe. The city administration selects suitable locations for which car-sharing providers can express their interest.

The popularity of car-sharing in Stuttgart is on the rise. With a quarter of all households having a car-sharing membership, the city's densely built-up structure and limited parking space make car-sharing a practical and sustainable solution. The cities "deer" and "Stadtmobil" are receiving 103 new parking spots in Stuttgart's public spaces for car-sharing.

The city's commitment to car-sharing extends beyond financial and spatial support. Stuttgart has been working since 2017 to expand car-sharing offers in all districts. The city council approved participation in the project in February 2025 with a broad majority, indicating a strong political will to promote car-sharing.

While specific details about large-scale funding for charging infrastructure for commercial electric vehicles in the U.S. or Germany may be found elsewhere, the "Charging Infrastructure for Electric Car-Sharing" program in Stuttgart seems to be a city-led initiative aimed at supporting the growth of electric car-sharing within its borders.
