Expanding Reach of New York Public Library's Digital Loan Service Wins Over More Users

The New York Public Library (NYPL) is on an unprecedented growth spree, racking up accolades left and right. In the past year, digital circulation skyrocketed over 81%, thanks to the surge of e-readers.

At present, NYPL houses six million printed books within its walls and boasts a digital library of 75,000 ebooks. Christopher Platt, the NYPL's director of collections and circulation operations, confirmed that this digital boom shouldn't come as a shock. After all, with more folks switching to eBooks, it's no wonder that people are flocking to libraries too. In 2010 alone, NYPL lent over 28 million items!

But the digital patrons are multiplying at a breakneck pace. "We've got over 150,000 Twitter followers on our main account and over 40,000 Facebook friends," Platt excitedly stated.

As the holiday season approaches and more e-readers make their way under the Christmas tree, the library is gearing up for a digital-lending onslaught. Whether you're a fan of the Kindle, the Nook, Kobo, or another reader, you can easily borrow books from the library and transfer them to your device. NYPL uses Overdrive for content delivery, and using it is as straightforward as one-two-three. All you need is a library card and a 4-digit PIN number.

Michael Kozlowski, editor-in-chief at our platform, has been writing about audiobooks and e-readers for the past fifteen years. His innovative articles have been featured in various renowned outlets, including CBC, CNET, Engadget, Huffington Post, the New York Times, and many more. Michael calls Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, home.

While the NYPL continues to offer a rich print collection with fantastic foot traffic and material lending, the digital circulation via platforms like OverDrive is a crucial and expanding part of its overall library service. This digital offering extends the library's reach beyond its physical branches, catering to the evolving needs of its vast patron base.

  1. The surge of e-readers has significantly contributed to the digital circulation at The New York Public Library (NYPL), almost doubling it over the past year.
  2. As more people opt for e-books, the library's digital library, which currently houses 75,000 ebooks, is expected to witness further growth.
  3. With platforms like OverDrive facilitating digital lending, the NYPL is enhancing its service to cater to the evolving lifestyle of its patrons, who increasingly rely on gadgets like smartphones and e-readers for entertainment and knowledge.
