FCC Unveils IoT Cybersecurity Labeling Program to Boost Consumer Trust
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has taken a significant step to enhance consumer safety in the Internet of Things (IoT) era. It has unanimously voted to create a voluntary cybersecurity labeling program for consumer-focused wireless IoT products. This initiative, set to boost consumer confidence, comes amidst a surge in IoT device attacks.
The new program will see eligible products, ranging from home security cameras to baby monitors, bearing a 'US Cyber Trust Mark' alongside a QR code. This QR code will direct consumers to detailed cybersecurity information about the product. The move is a response to the alarming increase in IoT device attacks, with over 1.5 billion incidents reported in the first half of 2021 alone.
The 'Cyber Trust Mark' aims to empower consumers to make informed purchasing decisions. It will help them differentiate between trustworthy products and those that may pose security risks. The program is a result of public-private collaboration. The FCC will oversee the initiative, while approved third-party label administrators, independent organizations that have voluntarily signed up, will handle product evaluations and authorizations.
The FCC's cybersecurity labeling program is a proactive measure to bolster consumer confidence in IoT devices. By providing clear, accessible information about a product's cybersecurity measures, the 'US Cyber Trust Mark' and accompanying QR code will help consumers make safer choices in the rapidly growing IoT market.
